Historic Highway 49 and the Sierra foothills

Mariposa County
Mariposa
August 2002

We happened upon this interesting old structure near the little cattle and timber town of Bootjack.

Calaveras County
Calaveras
July 2002

Parts of Calaveras County would fit easily into the "High Sierras" section.   This shot was taken at an upper elevation just off of SR 4, not far from Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Stanislaus County
Stanislaus
November 2002

Some late-fall color on the banks of the Stanislaus River, near Knights Ferry.  The Stanislaus supports a fall Chinook Salmon run, which we were able to observe during our visit.

Tuolumne County
Tuolumne
July 2002

Part of the border between Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties, New Melones Lake offers fishing for kokanee salmon (a small landlocked relative of the sockeye), in addition to bass and trout.

The counties of Amador, Calaveras, Madera, Mariposa, Sacramento, Stanislaus and Tuolumne.

Sacramento County
Sacramento
September 2003

The Capitol Building in Sacramento, where politics tend to be interesting, to put it mildly...

Amador County
Amador
November 2002

Downtown Sutter Creek.  The little town is named for John A. Sutter, who owned the sawmill in Coloma where gold was discovered in 1848.

Madera County
Madera
August 2003

More oaks and grassland  in the Sierra foothills around Coarsegold.   This snapshot was taken near SR 41.
